Copper SX Technical Tour
Saturday, September 20 through Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Registration deadline: June 30, 2008, 5:00pm PST
Limited to 30 participants
Cost: $995US
The tour will begin Saturday, September 20, with a visit to Bisbee, Arizona, an old mining town turned artist community. This visit will include a tour of the Queen Mine and enough time to enjoy a walk around this small interesting city prior to dinner. On Sunday, we will visit Ramsey Canyon in Southeastern Arizona, a birders paradise and home to one of the most varied populations of humming birds in the world. You can sit and enjoy this beautiful area or take a guided walking tour.
Sunday evening will take us to Miami, Arizona where on Monday we will visit 2 BHPB Billiton copper solvent extraction plants. The Miami plant is the first low profile, square settler plant built, while the Pinto Valley plant is a more modern low profile design. Because these plants do not have settler covers they offer a close up view of solvent extraction mixer settlers.
Tuesday and Wednesday, we will visit three Freeport McMoRan sites, the new Safford copper SX operation which began producing copper in the last half of 2007, the Morenci operation of Freeport-McMoRan which has 4 copper solvent extraction plants and produces about 1000 tonnes of copper daily, and the new automated analytical laboratory of Freeport McMoRan in Safford.
